Pickleball offers youth developmental advantages over tennis due to smaller court size (30% of tennis court), slower ball speed (40 mph vs 80+ mph tennis serves), and lower injury rates. The Reno Tennis Center’s junior programs serve ages 8–17 through three progressive stages: Beginner (fundamentals), Development (strategy), and Competition (tournament prep). Certified coaches use curriculum-based instruction with measurable progression benchmarks. Regional junior tournaments show RTC participants advancing 0.5–1.0 DUPR levels per season with structured play 2+ times weekly. Your child doesn’t need prior experience — just a paddle and willingness to try.

Outdoor courts at the Reno Tennis Center

Pickleball is easy to learn, hard to master, and social by design. Kids develop hand-eye coordination, footwork, and strategic thinking — without the intimidation factor of bigger courts or faster balls. At the Reno Tennis Center, certified coaches guide every junior through a progressive pathway with real curriculum, not just free play. The result: kids who can hold their own on any court in Reno and beyond.
Three stages designed to grow a complete player — from first contact with a paddle to competing in tournaments.
Ages 8+ · No Experience Needed
The foundation stage. Kids learn how to move on a court, hold the paddle correctly, and hit with confidence. Fun-first environment with structured games that teach without feeling like drills.
What They Learn:
Skill Building · Strategy Intro
Players who can rally consistently move into strategic development. The kitchen game, third-ball concepts, and positional awareness enter the picture. Drills become more competitive.
What They Learn:
Tournament Ready · Mental Game
For juniors who want to compete. Tournament preparation, match strategy, and mental toughness become the focus. Players at this stage represent the RTC in regional events.

Every junior knows where they are and what comes next — no dead ends.
6,000+ member community
Juniors play alongside the largest pickleball community in Northern Nevada.

Junior programs at the Reno Tennis Center start at age 8. No prior sports experience is required — just enthusiasm. Younger children who show strong coordination can be assessed individually.
For introductory sessions, loaner paddles may be available. Once your child commits to the program, a beginner paddle ($40–$60) and court shoes are recommended. The RTC Pro Shop can help you choose the right fit for their size and level.
Junior sessions are specifically designed for youth development — smaller group sizes, age-appropriate instruction, and a curriculum that builds skill progressively. Kids are not thrown into adult open play. They build confidence in a controlled environment before moving to competitive formats.
Most kids are rallying confidently within their first few sessions. Progression depends on frequency and natural development, but the structured pathway means parents always have a clear picture of where their child stands and what’s next.
Yes. Once juniors reach Stage 3 (Junior Competition), they are prepared for USAPA-affiliated junior tournaments and regional events. The Reno Tennis Center actively supports junior players in regional competition — many local juniors go on to compete across Nevada and neighboring states.
