Gear Guide for Reno Players

Pickleball
Gear Guide
for Reno.

Mid-weight paddles (7.5–8.2 oz) with polypropylene core and carbon fiber face dominate Reno due to desert wind conditions affecting ball trajectory. Beginner paddles ($40–60) prioritize control; intermediate ($80–150) balance power and touch; elite ($150+) add spin and precision. Court shoes require lateral support: K-Swiss and ASICS with gum soles provide traction on hard courts. Reno’s altitude (4,505 feet) affects ball flight: balls travel 5–7% faster than sea level, requiring Franklin X-40 for beginners (easier control) and Selkirk Pro S1 for competition. The RTC Pro Shop (775-689-2975, Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat–Sun 8am–2pm) offers demo programs and staff guidance by DUPR level. Total beginner gear cost: under $100.

Pickleball paddle selection at Reno Tennis Center Pro Shop — mid-weight carbon fiber paddles for high altitude play

Gear Guide

We only recommend gear validated under real playing conditions at altitude. The wind and elevation of Reno change the equation.

The Core Decision

Pickleball Paddles

SELKIRK · DIADEM

Weight, surface, and balance determine your play style. Polypropylene core paddles (carbon fiber or fiberglass face) dominate the market. Before choosing, know your skill level.

Reno Recommendation:

Mid-weight paddles (7.5–8.2 oz) with a 16mm core perform best in the desert wind conditions.

Injury Prevention

Court Shoes

K-SWISS

Durability and traction validated on hard courts. Lateral support is critical in pickleball — the fast kitchen movement creates serious ankle stress without proper footwear.

Key Rule:

Never use running shoes for pickleball. Lateral support is completely different and significantly increases injury risk.

Game Ready

Balls

FRANKLIN X-40 · SELKIRK PRO S1

Start with the Franklin X-40 — easier to control, the standard for open play. As your game develops, move to the Selkirk Pro S1 for leagues and competitive sessions.

Reno Conditions:

Outdoor balls (26–40 holes, harder) for Reno’s open-air courts. Wind and altitude affect ball flight — medium-weight balls handle it best.
